The Maze Runner | Novel

Outline

Thomas, a young boy, wakes up in a metal container, known as the 'box', with no recollection of any past events in his life. After arriving in what is known as the 'Glade', where already a lot of other boys around his age live, he discovers that this is just the middle of a giant maze, where at night, giant, mechanical, slug-like creatures rome around. The leader of the groupe, Alby, establishes that Thomas is very curious, and that he believes that there is something strange about Thomas, due to everything beginning to go wrong as Thomas arrived. In the wake of Thomas' second day, a girl, Teresa, ruins the culture of the glade, by being the first girl to arrive, a day apart from the last person and to be the last person to arrive, instead of every month. Thomas uses his curiosity towards his advantage to try and help everyone escape the maze. Subsequent to finding out about how there are people 'watching' all the gladers, which they call 'the creators', Thomas realises that all the labels on supplies, 'W.I.C.K.E.D', may be related to it. Through discovering that Thomas and Teresa have telekentic abilities, Thomas uses this to his advantage in trying to escape. Despite the many casualties in the process, Thomas finally leads all the remaining gladers to safety. Although, the chancellor, Ava Paige, informs them all that this was all an experiment, (hence their name 'World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department'), to try and look for a cure to a deadly virus, known as 'the Flare'. Soon after, the group is brought to safety, while also being further informed about the flare.

Concept of Journey

Chapter: 34-40

In these chapters, Thomas comes across multiple events that acts as both as a motive to escaping, but also as barriers towards Thomas and the gladers, journey.

Under W.I.C.K.E.D's control, Teresa triggers the end of the maze, by turning off all the effects, which also includes the maze doors not closing. This sparks panic within the glade, motivating the gladers to get out of the maze. Although, on the other hand it also acts as a barrier, which then makes the gladers fearful into what may be out in the maze.

Text Deconstruction

Chapter: 34-40

In this novel, Thomas and the other gladers, go through, not just a physical journey, but an inner one as well. Despite facing many different obstacles along the way, Thomas manages to show determination to help his friends in escaping W.I.C.K.E.D's control. By engaging with the rest of the gladers, they all work together in trying to figure out the code in which will save them all. Under attack by grievers, Gally, one of the gladers, also one of the antagonists in the novel, gets carried away by grievers who are retreating back into the depths of the maze. This then set in motion an idea within Minho (Keeper of the Runners). This idea, being to run into the maze and follow the grievers, was to help the ideas behind where to go when escaping the maze. Through the description in how Minho returned from the maze, he seemed to be anticipating the results to prove his primary theories. This new found determination in the gladers, had also triggered them to work together to try and figure out this code faster, to assist in the escape.
