Synopsis

The Truman Show' is a movie about a TV show that runs 24 hours a day 7 days a week, to record the life of Truman Burbank. The shows creator and director Christof's believed motive for creating the show was to observe a show where there was one non actor to see what true reality TV should look like.

Truman had been born into this staged world, filled with actors. All he knew about this world was all a lie. By the time he reached his 30th birthday he began to notice that something in this staged world, he simply knew as 'Seahaven', was not right. Many small mistakes from crew members behind the scenes were at fault. Despite the fact that everyday in Truman's life was pretty much exactly the same, he never really began to notice anything until a light was to fall from the sky. Although, due to Christof's power, he was able to distribute many obstacles to restrict Truman from finding out the truth.

Throughout the film, we see how Truman begins to realise the truth behind his surroundings, and how he overcomes the many barriers put in by Christof. Along with this, there is this constant reminder as to why Truman wants to leave Seahaven. This is because he wants to go to Fiji to see the girl that he loves.

At the end of the film, we see how Truman has in fact discovered the truth behind Seahaven. By sailing over the 'ocean' on the Santa Maria, he is escaping this made up world he had been living in for the past 30 years of his life. Although, on Truman's voyage to escape, as a result of Christof's high demands, he nearly kills Truman for the sake of the show, Truman's resilience allows him to stay alive and continue to escape. Once Truman reached the end of the set, just as he reaches the door to exit, Christof finally reveals the underlying truth of the show where Truman then simply replies with 'In case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight!'

In this scene, Truman identifies his motive to wanting to leave Seahaven and begin this physical journey.

Truman is known to be falling in love with Sylvia, but due to the fact that this was not part of Christof’s plan, Sylvia had to be taken away, therefore creating yet another barrier for his journey. As a result of this love for Sylvia, Truman is determined to reconnect with her, because finding Sylvia is his catalyst for his journey.

Scene Deconstruction

Scene: Sylvia gets taken away from Truman

In this scene, Truman has been exposed to the catalyst of his journey. During this scene, we see Truman and Sylvia on the beach trying to get away from everyone and just be alone together. Despite the fact that Sylvia is aware of the consequences if she is to be caught with Truman, she goes ahead with this act anyway. The audience is made known of this love between Sylvia and Truman, which becomes even more obvious once Sylvia got picked up by her 'dad', whom she had never met before.
